this is not an abstract space

video dance, Athens, May 2023

Space is something so primarily natural. We are born into it as part of it. It holds a wealth of sensory impressions that enrich our lives. But where there is much, there is also much distraction. How to deal withit? Natural sciences, for example, try to eliminate noise by abstraction, the process of taking away or removing characteristics froman entity in order to reduce it to a set of its essential properties. How would space, reduced in this manner, feel like? How would such a space affect the being it contains? Is it even possible to exist in it? Our improvisational process was based on the attempt to find a somatic experience of an abstract space. Acknowledging that existence in space cannot just mean to be inside of it as its consumer but rather to bespace itself, which must therefore lead to an abstraction of our persona. We stumbled, noticing: this is not an abstract space – it’s you and me in a cube.
